Is it bad to cut slots in Plywood?

I have a school project which involves cutting straight slot grooves along the length of pieces of wood, i have an 3D illustration of it in the link.

Question is, since plywood are pieces of veneers joined together, would cutting a slot like that ruin the wood? Like cause it to split, etc?

And as a side question, if you didn’t have access to a milling/CNC machine, which i understand is just about the easiest way to cut this kind of slots, what other lower tech alternatives do you suggest? My school doesn’t allow the use of milling machines to cut anything other than metal. =(

There are a few ways to accomplish this task.

You can cut a groove into plywood with a table saw using a conventional blade by making multiple passes and moving the rip fence 1/8″ at a time. The down side to this is the bottom of the groove will not be all that smooth. You can smooth it out with the use of a chisel.

Next you can use a table saw with a dado blade. This is a blade or series of blades that can be adjusted to cut a wide swath through the wood all at once. Usually 3/4″ is the widest you can cut on one pass. This tends to leave the bottom of the groove smoother than a saw blade with multiple passes but not perfectly smooth.

You can also use a router mounted under a router table and a rip fence or a router with a straight edge clamped or screwed down to the plywood. A router will give a smoother cut to the groove, but for long pieces a table saw or a router table would be preferable to a clamped straight edge.

Plywood comes in various thicknesses. You do not want to cut into plywood any deeper than approximately 1/2 of the total thickness of the plywood.
