Utah generous nature indescribable masterpiece

by Philip Yaffe

I live in Brussels, Belgium, but I am a native of California. It used to be fun to see the reaction of the people here when I told them that. His dull eyes and sigh almost, If you ever visit the United States, will be in California. "

It used to be fun to see the reaction. It is also, because now I feel like a traitor to my heritage. "If you ever visit the United States," I say now is better than California. "

Indeed, Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, Yosemite and other natural wonders in California are well worth seeing. And Los Angeles (my hometown), San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento and cities of interest. However, what you see in Utah literally speechless.

Utah? Yes Utah. Besides a bit of Arizona and Nevada. But especially Utah.

I have not come to this conclusion lightly. I carried him for several years by a Belgian friend who has just returned from a trip to the United States and showed me her photographs, especially Bryce Canyon (west of Utah). They were beautiful blinding. With a smile of superior knowledge, I laughed a little and listen said: "I know something about photography. I know how these images can be arranged."

"I do not arrange" responded. "In Bryce Canyon all you have to do is close your eyes, place the camera anywhere. And that's what you get!

I assumed challenge. A few months later, I went to visit family in Las Vegas, then rent a car and headed north into Utah. The first stop after driving through the arid desert of Nevada was Zion Canyon National Park. Very green and beautiful, including but not exactly what I would call spectacular. Two hours later, I saw Bryce Canyon National Park and just do not believe my eyes. "This simply can not be!" I breathing. I spent the day exploring the area, still panting and still not believe his eyes,

I just saw Bryce Canyon seven times, and always with the same unalloyed amazement. I confess to a weakness for something symphonies Park mandarin stone, thousands of them, literally. But my reaction to Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, and Natural Resources National Parks of the bridges, all in Utah, are very close.

If there is really an enchanted land anywhere in the world in Utah should be.

Knowing the area quite well now, I propose an easy route for first time visitors with personal advice you probably will not find in guidebooks. This is not a fixed route, with the exception of cases the early years. Each has different interests, and time and money to spend on them. Therefore, beyond what is strictly necessary, to see and do, you be in your account.

How to win Las Vegas

Start your vacation in Las Vegas. If you've never been there before, is worth watching. If you have been there before, you probably want to see him, because he is in constant evolution.

Since becoming a tourist attraction popular (just under 40 million visitors a year to year), Las Vegas is not the paradise that was incredibly cheap. However, it is still very cheap.

Plan to arrive on a weekday (Monday – Thursday). On weekends, the prices of the hotels can zoom to double and triple what they often are during the week (Friday, Saturday, and some hotels, Sunday).

You can take advantage at any time (weekdays and weekends) to the rich buffets for virtually LV nothing. The various hotels fierce competition with each other to put the best possible way extends to the lowest possible price. Why? The theory is that when you go into a hotel to eat, what you may lose richly fed, more than recoup what you put in the casino.

Avoid the trap. Enjoy trading in the buffet and keep hands in his pockets as you go in the casino. In most hotels, the only way to go to the buffet at the casino, especially to tempt you!

If you play and thinks he can win playing poker. Avoid blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and certainly the one-armed bandits (slot machines).

What is the difference?

When you play poker, you're biting your skill against others only to the table. If you're good enough, you can leave a package, the casino, while rents space and simply does not care who wins and loses. However, if you play with others, you play against the house. The casino does not care much about who wins and loses, you or them. So arrange things so that you will always be the loser. Always.

Do not you think? It is no secret. Virtually Casino has all the signs and shouted something like "We give the best opportunity in the city: 98%!" This is the LV code means "For every 98 Sometimes you win, we win 100 times. "

To say that games are fixed, does not mean that the dice on the craps table is loaded or that the dealer has a button secret to control the rotation of the roulette wheel. Establishing standards.

In blackjack, for example, the dealer distributes two cards to each player, including himself. Any person whose cards add to 21 wins automatically, if the winner is the person (or persons) who is closer to the magic number 21 without going over. Imagine your first two cards total 14, so they ask for another card. Is 10, bringing its total to 24. You are over 21 (which has gone bankrupt), so that the concessionaire raises your bet. The dealer is always the last play. What if also filed for bankruptcy. What happens? Nothing. He still keeps his bet. Therefore, even if the dealer loses, the casino always wins!

It's like all the other games where you play against the house. The rules are defined to ensure that sooner or later, the casino has their money.

Knowing that you will lose, melts in your mind that is lost, the only reason the game is fun. If you like playing blackjack, craps, roulette, etc, go ahead. But choosing the lowest bid possible. You can have as much fun losing $ 10 that you can lose $ 100, probably more.

If your goal is to win these games, stay as far from Las Vegas as you can. As irony: How do you leave Las Vegas with a $ 1 million your pocket? Easy. Comes with 5 million dollars.

First stop: Zion Canyon

To return to the real world, it is time to move to northern Utah.

Foreign visitors should be aware that the U.S. road network is divided between the federal highways funded and state-funded roads. Both classes are generally of high quality and easy to drive, with federal roads tend to be larger with more channels.

Federal highways are shown in panels in the form of a shield. There are two categories of federal highways, designated "another" or "U.S." and a number. In conversation, the names are often abbreviated, so that it becomes Interstate I-1 1, 2 I-2 becomes, roads, etc. The United States remains 1 2 USA, etc.

State roads are identified by the state's name plus a number, and displayed on billboards that represents the emblem of the State. Utah, for example, is known as the "state spirit ", so that the roads are signs the form of a beehive. In a state (because you know where) is a common practice to drop the name of and simply state Route 1, Route 2, Route 3, etc.

You will go to Las Vegas Interstate15 north (I-15). Once in Utah, turn onto Route 9. His first stop Zion Canyon is about 4 to 5 hours of LV, where you'll want to spend the night.

How to find comfortable accommodation, cheap

If motels booked in advance before leaving the LV? Of course not!

One of the best things about hiking the West's national parks is the meaning of freedom and spontaneity that can give you. You never know what will impress the most, so you never know how long you can stay anywhere. regiments reservations to come to you.

So how can you be sure to find a suitable location and reasonable price for the night? In fact, it is not so difficult.

Throughout the West there are motels in abundance, even in relatively remote areas. You can usually find a place to stay, even in high season. The trick is to start looking around 5 – 5:30 pm The election is likely, however, an abundant resource in the control until 6 pm is the time to take a nap or a swim in the pool before going to eat 8 hours prior to return to the motel about 10:30 – 11 hours for a relaxing night sleep.

However, not bored the search for a room. In Utah, the season, do not follow in late May – early September convention, when children are not in school. In many places in the high season runs until mid-October.

Do not insist on being right at the entrance to national parks. For example, the people of Springdale Zion entry Canyon has many motels. But prices are high and in high season it will be difficult to find a room. The hurricane, a pleasant journey of 35 minutes from Sion, has many more motels, prices are about half those of Springdale, and a wider selection of restaurants.

So do not automatically lead brand to a motel. As large chains Motel continue to extend their tentacles throughout the country (Motel 6, Super 8, Ramada, Holiday Inn, Best Western, etc.), at owned local motels are fighting for their lives. Can be achieved.

For example, my wife and I took in a village in search of a place to stay. We particularly eager to go swimming. The first sight we saw was a brand Motel. It had a pool, but it was heated. We were in the late fall, so the water temperature was tolerable, but not really warm. I asked the price of a double room. It was $ 79. "It's a bit beyond our budget, he said. "Oh, is the ground floor. If you go up a floor, is $ 59." It was more to our budget, but was just after 5 am, he said he would look around first, and perhaps come back later.

Approximately 2 km further, you've seen a motel room. It was less spiffy because he was not new, but it seems be well groomed. I asked the price: $ 42. The room was acceptable, but the best part is that it has a heated indoor pool! After enjoying an hour or two in the warm water caress, we went for a meal at a nearby restaurant recommended by the owner of the motel. Overall a delicious and save money and experience.

For foreigners who are not familiar with the trip to the United States, you should know that most of the motels are used without breakfast. Therefore a number of local restaurants (called cafes) will open, often from 6 am, where you can choose what they want to start the day, eggs, bacon, waffles, pancakes, steak, oatmeal, etc. You do not want a good breakfast every day, but do not despise the idea. A coffee shop healthy breakfast is a very important part of the experience American Travel.

On to Bryce Canyon

About 1 ½ hours from Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon. Zion Canyon will leave on Highway 9, turn north on U.S. 89. When the U.S. 89 crosses Highway 12, you must turn right for about 35 minutes at the park entrance.

For the accommodation two options. Along Highway 12, you will find motels, whose prices rise the closer we get to the park. They have another disadvantage. They are a bit isolated if almost forced to eat when you decide to sleep.

The alternative is cheaper and gives you more freedom. About 5 minutes past the junction of U.S. 89 Highway12 find Panguitch. This city has an abundance of motels, a number of restaurants, a supermarket and other businesses.

Count on spending two days in Bryce Canyon, and three, possibly, if you can not be separated, prior to its next destination. So book your motel accordingly.

When you decide go ahead, resist the temptation to return to the interstate for a quick trip to Canyonlands and Arches in eastern Utah. This is an hour's drive along a comfortable 4-5 Panguitch high-speed highway. The problem is that it looks almost nothing of interest in the road.

Instead, take Highway 12 past back to Bryce Canyon Capital Reef National Park. Highway 12 one of the most picturesque streets of the United States, offering remarkable views as seen in the parks themselves. The temptation to stop often to take photos is overwhelming.

Judgement on the reef of the capital: a key issue

If you really stop at the capital Arrecife?

Depends how time you have. Like all national parks, the capital of the reef is magnificent. But in my opinion, is one of the less spectacular (there are degrees of spectacular).

The best thing is to follow at Torrey Highway12, located outside the capital of coral, and check in one place. There are motels and restaurants. Panguitch leave before 9 o'clock, Torrey can be reached in time to see some of the capital that day reefs. The next day return for a second look, then the movement of the afternoon in the direction Arches and Canyonlands.

Highway 24, leading Capital Reef and Canyonlands Arches, has many tourist attractions along the route. So keep your camera and do not rush.

Route 24 connects to I-70 at a place called Rio Verde. It is always about an hour drive from Moab, the city authorities and the "Gateway to Arches and Canyonlands. However, unless you have a specific reason to go to Moab, do not.

Significantly lower than Moab, Green River has a wide choice of motels and restaurants four or five. On average, you will find a motel about 20 to 25% cheaper in Green River and you should have little difficulty in finding one, while in Moab, according to season and time to get there, you may have to look a little. Both North Canyonlands (known as "The Island in the Sky") and arcs are only an hour drive from Green River.

Before you read any further, I warn you that this route is not the famous Grand Canyon. There is good reason. North has the right of the Canyonlands section near the entrance that looks much like the Grand Canyon. If you've never seen the Grand Canyon, Canyonlands offers a convincing alternative. And you will not have to spend two precious days to go and see the real thing!

South Canyonlands

His next stop will be Canyonlands South (also known as "The Needle"), which is a two hours from Rio Verde and one hour drive from Moab. But do not rush. The road south of Moab, Canyonlands offers a series of photo sessions.

You probably want to stay in Monticello. This city is much smaller than Moab, more like Green River, with a reasonable choice of motels and restaurants. Be sure to ask for directions to the Mormon Temple, a few blocks from the main road, but worth the detour.

Leaving Green River Moab or before 9 o'clock, you must arrive before noon at Monticello. The southern entrance to Canyonlands is several miles before arriving at Monticello, so that you can spend hours on the first fleet. In this way, you can decide whether or not to return to the park the next morning and move immediately.

Natural Bridges and spectacular Mirador

Coming out of Monticello, in the southern U.S. Blanding and 191 to the junction with Highway 95, then turn west. Here are two sites is rarely mentioned in guidebooks. The first is Natural Bridges National Monument. As Capital Reef is less spectacular than some other places interest, but well worth visiting.

A few miles from Natural Bridge, south on Highway 261 to one of the most impressive you'll see forever. The road seems to end abruptly a cliff that drops hundreds of feet of Monument Valley, but gives the impression of diving in the center of the earth.

The road stop there, but down the cliff to the plain. You may be reluctant to make this perilous journey, apparently by a gravel road. However, long ago, shoelaces, while the slowdown, which makes the descent easier than it seems.

But what's new? Do not worry. Once down, you can drive on the road from 163 to 191 and Back-up a little back to Blanding.

This will be a decision point. Now you can go east about 130 miles from Mesa Verde, with spectacular scenery and the remains of cliff dwellings in India. Or you can head south in the valley of the Moment Petrified Forest and Painted Desert.

However, if you're starting to doubt that what you saw in Bryce Canyon was real (I've seen seven times and still I have doubts), you can take Highway 95 to the capital Arrecife Beck. Highway 95 is just as interesting and photogenic as Highway 24 between the capitals of Coral and Rio Verde.

After leaving Bryce Canyon, the second time may be looking for an interesting and economical place for R & R (rest and relaxation). Stop in Mesquite. This is the last oasis of gambling in Nevada before crossing into Arizona and Utah. Even a small city (but fast growing), Mesquite has only a handful of large casino hotels, which, its own form of many of its rivals Las Vegas about half the price.

As head down I-15 back to LV, 2-3 hours during the swing to the Valley of Fire State value Nevada Park bypass.

Another possibility. If time allows, take I-15 to LV right Laughlin, about 1 ½ hours south. Laughlin is an oasis of the latest work on the southern border of Nevada. There are several advantages to spend a couple of days there.

1. To get to Laughlin, must pass through Hoover (more bold) Dam and Lake Mead, both worth a look to see.

2. Laughlin is the Colorado River, so if you like water sports, you feel comfortable in his element.

3. The river is the border with Arizona and California, So if you've never been to California and to insist on the foot of the Golden State, is only minutes away.

4. Because Laughlin and Mesquite, is not a high profile tourist attraction, hotels are much cheaper than in Las Vegas. You will appreciate the difference in weekend when a $ 60 hotel in LV can easily get to $ 140-170, while in a Laughlin hotel equivalent of up to $ 35 $ 70-85.

Final Tips for visitors foreign

The United States tends to "March at a different rate. Do not do things differently. Have you ever noticed that the rooms in hotels and motels generally do not include breakfast, which is very different from the practice in many other countries. Here are some other things to see.

1. Published price vs final

State and local taxes are almost never indicated in the price of the list, so the price you see is almost never the price you pay. This is true in hotels, motels, restaurants, department stores, etc. For example, if a $ 55 motel shows a night in a double room, the final price is likely to be in the range of $ 61.

Why are things this way? The idea is that if people do not know what they are paying taxes, do not know when they need very angry. Petrol (commonly called "gas") is an exception, the price given is the final price.

2. Tips

"Service" in restaurants is almost never included in the price. The client must be able to add voluntarily to the tip. Normally, the tip should be about 18% of the bill (in a restaurant called the "check"). The usual practice is to leave the tip in cash on the table. However, if you pay by credit card, you can add directly. Many people chose to do both, or pay in cash, while leaving on the table.

Whatever you do, remember not to tip. restaurant workers in Generally, a minimum wage so that depend on their tips for their livelihood. No deposit is equivalent to stealing.

3. Metric – U.S. conversions

If you're used to the metric system, you can find the U.S. measures confusing. Here are some simple approaches.

A. Weight

1 pound (1 pound) = 0.45 kg. To convert pounds to kilograms, divided by 2, then subtract 1 / 10.

Example: Convert pounds to 6 pounds. 6 / 2-0,3 (1 / 10 3) = 3 – 0.3 = 2.7 kg

For small weights, as in a restaurant: 1 pounds = 16 ounces = 1 pound 16 oz So wrote an 8 oz steak is 1 / 2 = 225 g 450 g 12 oz steak is 3 / 4 450 = 340 g.

B. Distance

Some areas of the United States show the distance in both miles and kilometers, but these places are rare, so you have to use miles. 1 mile = 1.6 km. To a good approximation, add half a mile away, then add 1 / 10 for miles.

Example: Convert 70 miles to kilometers. 70 + 35 (1 / 2 70) + 7 (1 / 10, 70) = 70 + 35 + 7 = 112 km.

C. Temperature

Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 30, divide by two, then add 1 / 10.

Example: Convert 88 ° F to Celsius. 88 ° F – 30 = 58 divided by 2 = 29. Now add 1 / 10 of 29.to da 29 + 2.9 = 31.9 ° C.

Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 2, add 30, then subtract 1 / 10.

Example: Convert 32 ° C in degrees Fahrenheit. 32 ° C x 2 = 64 + 30 = 94, subtract 3.2 (1 / 10 of 32) = 90.8 ° F

D. Price

The adjustment of prices is difficult because the rates of exchange rates fluctuate constantly. Suppose that 1 euro = 1.3 U.S. dollars. Divide the price by $ 2, then add half.

Example: Convert $ 24 euro. 24 divided by 2 + 6 (half of 12) = 12 + 6 = 18 euros.

Bon voyage. And be ready to return. Because once you've been in Utah, it is very difficult to stay away. To me, it's impossible.
